The prototype for the eventual production version of the Supermarine Scimitar flew in Jan 1956 with production aircraft being delivered in 1957. It saw service with the Royal Navy from 1958 to 1969. Whilst popular with crews it was beset with design faults and was a poor aircraft in some ways compared to many of its contemporaries. Landing accidents were common and it suffered from a high accident rate with 39 aircraft being lost to various accidents.
