INS Viraat was an iconic aircraft carrier that served the Indian Navy for nearly three decades, symbolizing India’s maritime power and strategic capabilities. Originally commissioned as HMS Hermes in the Royal Navy in 1959, the vessel played a critical role in numerous operations before being transferred to India. It was recommissioned as INS Viraat on May 12, 1987, becoming the flagship of the Indian Navy.
Viraat is Sanskrit for "Giant" or "Supreme," reflecting the ship’s commanding presence and importance. Throughout its service, INS Viraat was not just a warship but a symbol of national pride and defense capability. As one of the longest-serving aircraft carriers in the world, it formed the core of the Indian Navy's Carrier Battle Group, providing air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and power projection capabilities.
INS Viraat held immense strategic value for the Indian Navy. With a displacement of 28,700 tons, it was a versatile platform capable of hosting a range of operations. Its presence enabled the Indian Navy to maintain control over strategic areas of the Indian Ocean, project power far beyond its shores, and act as a deterrent against potential adversaries. The ship’s ability to launch fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters made it a critical asset for force projection, rapid response, and humanitarian assistance missions.
Throughout its service life, INS Viraat participated in numerous international exercises, bilateral training programs, and operational deployments, enhancing interoperability with other navies and showcasing India's growing maritime prowess. As a flagship, INS Viraat played a central role in shaping India's naval strategy and expanding its maritime influence.
INS Viraat was more than just a warship; it became a symbol of India’s aspirations to be a blue-water navy capable of defending its interests across the Indo-Pacific region. Its impressive operational record and adaptability to diverse roles earned it admiration and respect globally. The ship was often the centrepiece of naval events, hosting foreign dignitaries, conducting maritime exhibitions, and serving as a platform for international naval diplomacy.
The aircraft carrier’s service life was marked by several successful missions, humanitarian efforts, and strategic deployments, further solidifying its status as a maritime icon. Its decommissioning on March 6, 2017, marked the end of an era, but its legacy continues to inspire future generations of naval officers and enthusiasts.
